NEED & MOTIVES
Aware of the importance of promoting local culture in an engaging and innovative way, the council of Tondela wanted to create a museum that gave relevance to its historical relics, and that ascribe touristic and cultural value to the small town located in the Portuguese countryside.
Arqueohoje, a company that develops contents for museums in a dynamic and modern way, was selected, alongside with DISPLAX Interactive Systems, expert in interactive equipments development, to create Tondela’s museum.
The museum sector has shown the need to develop dynamic projects in order to ensure a younger and more attractive offer to their target audience.
This museum differentiates itself from others particularly by the subtle and natural integration between DISPLAX Interactive Systems and the museological contents, transforming the traditional concept of museum.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The overall concept of the museum focuses on the history of Tondela and its relics, in an evolutionary perspective. Thus, the museum is divided into several sections, and each one portrays historical elements that contributed to human evolution in general, and the city’s population particularly, in a dynamic and interactive perspective enabled by DISPLAX solutions.

TERRITORY
This space reproduces the essence of the typical Tondelense (Tondela’s inhabitant) and their land, through the portrayal of their everyday life and the exhibition of the geographical potentialities, climate type of fauna and flora, agriculture and viticulture, among others.
A DISPLAX Interactive LCD embedded in this module tells the story of the local community and the potential of Tondela, since the beginning of its existence until the present day. The touch screen makes it possible to travel through the history of the Tondelenses, and the interaction intrinsic to this product shows a past filled with rich memories in terms of natural and social content.
HERITAGE
This module represents the archaeological heritage, rescued over the years by professionals.
The DISPLAX Pharmacy is a conceptual model developed specifically for the museum and that, assuming the form of an interactive table, reflects the union of real objects with digital contents, giving visitors a museum experience that benefits from the advantages of both worlds.
The touch in the objects present at the table triggers digital information about its history. It’s also possible to interact with a map that shows the sites of the county where this objects were found in prehistoric, roman and medieval times.
CROSSBOW EXPERIENCE
Area that presents the history of the Tondela’s besteiros (medieval soldiers who used crossbows) and the relevance that they had to the local community. It emphasizes the parish of Besteiros, which until 1836 was the county town.
For this module, DISPLAX developed multimedia applications (interactive games) that are projected on a wall. One of them uses a real crossbow as a tool for interaction in a scenario of war, hunting and peace projected onto one of the museum walls.
The game´s interactivity is present in the connection between the application and the crossbow that functions as a controller that triggers virtual arrows that hit characters present in the application’s scenario.

FAITH
This module contains an altar offered by Pope Benedict XIV to the owner of the manor which today houses the museum.
The celestial projection designed by DISPLAX complements, in an innovative and modern way, the restoration work made in an old chapel. The images selected by DISPLAX represent dichotomies such as birth/death and sunrise/sunset, always within the concept of evolution, from the beginning until the last days.

BLACK CLAY
This space has examples of typical clay, which had been, for many years, the benchmark of the traditional commerce in the region, and explains their way of cooking and modeling.
A DISPLAX interactive table was integrated into this concept, which allows, by touching the screen, the disclosure of information about the extraction, processing and cooking of black clay, among other curiosities, in a dynamic and attractive way.
Sanatoriums
Area dedicated to preserve the memory of the sanatoriums that were very important in fighting and treating tuberculosis.
A DISPLAX Overlay, an interactive LCD embedded in a customized wall, aims to tell the story of the Tondela’s Sanatorium, since its very beginning until its decline, and provide information about Tuberculosis and its modes of treatment. The touch screen offers the visitor an interactive experience through the content created by DISPLAX, which reflects a time that marked the history of medicine.

Future
Future and Innovation in Tondela region
Area dedicated to rest and leisure, which shows how the county has evolved and how it is creating the conditions to achieve the high level of technological and social development expected by the Tondelenses (Tondela’s inhabitants).
The system of rear projection, with projectors of high capacity provided by DISPLAX, constitutes a big “future wall" that show contents about the development of Tondela, in various levels and perspectives
